Runescape 2, RS2
The Java-based Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG) Runescape (RS) was developed by Jagex Ltd in January 2001. Runescape 2 (RS2) was an update released in March 2004 to improve the game’s graphics and in May 2006 additional updates were completed to further improve the quality of the graphics.
Players have the option of signing up for a P2P (pay to play) or F2P (free to play) Runescape 2 account. Currently there are nine million active F2P members and over one million P2P members. There are over 150 servers which are located in Australia, Finland, Netherlands, United Kingdom, United States, and Sweden. Each server allows a max capacity of 2,000 players and are divided between F2P and P2P servers.
Unlike many other MMORPG games all Runescape 2 character are human. Players may choose the gender, facial features, hairstyle, hair and skin color, and clothing when creating their character and can obtain additional Runescape 2 clothing, armor, weapons, and items to further customize and enhance their characters appearances. They can also express emotions by using different RS2 emotes.
Runescape 2 takes place in the world of Gielinor and is made of many different Islands, regions, and cities, each which feature different materials, quests, and None Playing Characters (NPC’s). Players initially begin their journey on Tutorial Island where they go through a training session and are provided with the essentials for survival. Even after graduating from Tutorial Island players still have access to tutors located throughout towns and cities to continue to learn new skills. Game play is centered mostly around gaining experience in a skill, going on quests and missions, combating, and random events.
The Runescape 2 skills available are Attack, Cooking, Crafting, Defence, Fishing, Firemaking, Hitpoints, Magic, Mining, Prayer, Ranged, Runecrafting, Strength, Smithing, and Woodcutting. Additional skills for P2P members only are Agility, Construction, Farming, Fletching, Herblore, Hunter, Slayer, Summoning, and Thieving. When practicing a skill players will gain experience and level that skill. When reaching the highest level of 99 in a skill, players may obtain a special cape called a “Cape of Achievement” or “Skill Cape” which gives players an additional bonus to reach level 100 in that skill.
In addition to leveling skills players may also complete Runescape 2 quests which usually have a story line. The quests are divided into four groups. The first group is Novice quests which are basically extended tutorials for newer players. The second type is Intermediate quests where players encounter basic challenges. The third is Experienced and Master quests which opens up new areas for more experienced players, and the last one is called “Quest Cape” which is only obtainable once required RS2 quests are completed.
Players can also participate in combat by either fighting monsters or PvP (Player vs. Player) combat. Runescape 2 Combat is divided into three groups which are: Melee, Mage, and Ranged. Melee combat is close range and does not require weapons, Magic combat is casting spells using runestones, and Ranged combat requires projectile weapons.
Throughout game play random events will occur that requires player participation. Some random events may require that players answer a question correctly or simply click an NPC while other are longer and more difficult puzzles and tasks to complete. These random events were introduced to not only reduce monotony but also discourage the use of Runescape 2 macros, bots, and autos.
By successfully leveling skills, defeating monsters, and completing quests and random events, players are rewarded with Runescape 2 gold (the game currency) gems, items, cloths, and other rewards.
